Sunday, 5th January - holiday Oci. The customs are the same as for Detinjci and Materice, but now the "victims" are men. Children wake up at dawn with the equipment for tying up prepared. To free themselves, fathers must give gifts to their children.
Whenever they notice that the father is daydreaming, the mission of a new tying up can begin again.
Since fathers are untamable and do not give in so easily, it is best for the children to tie them while they are still sleeping. That way, gifts are guaranteed. Of course, mom has to help a little for the plan to succeed.
Every man who enters the house and has fulfilled his role as a parent is a candidate for tying up. A scarf, rope, belt, anything that can bind a man's legs or arms is allowed to be used, and children should never untie a tied man until they see the gifts.
After Detinjci and Materice, Oci or Ocevi is the last holiday before Christmas. Traditions say that this is the day when the family is the center of the world, and a festive, fast meal is mandatory.
Just like for Materice, on this day it is customary for men to wear a new wardrobe in order to enter the New Year with new energy and strength.
Taken together, these are holidays that remind us of the importance of family, the connection between members, harmony, love and respect. Helping the poor is an important symbol of these dates. Don't forget to make those who need a lot happy today, but who cannot afford to buy basic necessities for themselves.
Holiday Oci is very important because it reminds us of God's blessing that a man has become a father. Being a father is a great role, and being a good father is the life definition of every real man.
The Serbian Orthodox Church with its believers on this day slowly enters the greatest holiday - Christmas. Harmony above all, love for close ones and affection for spiritual values on this day should be a priority in every family.
